The tamarind (Tamarindus indica) is a tropical tree native to East Africa. Already in prehistoric times the Tamarind came to India, from where it spread as a useful plant over almost all tropical areas - suitable for all soils except acidic soils - tolerates drought for a long time and the hot sun - grows slowly - up to 25 meters high, evergreen tree with a dense, rounded crown. The alternate leaves are composed, pinnate and 5-15 cm long. The 20-40 petals are 2 cm long and gray-green in color - small, yellow flowers, 10-15 pieces in clusters . On the sepals run small, orange or reddish stripes.  The fruits are 7-20 cm long, brown legumes. The oval, hard seeds are embedded in dark brown, acidic aromatic tasting flesh. The plants usually bear fruit after 4-6 years. The yield can be up to 300 kg of fruit per year.  From the pulp of the fruits tamarind syrup is prepared. From the syrup soft drinks are made. The pulp is also a component of various sauces, including worcestersauce, and is an important ingredient in Asian and Antilian cuisine. Fruits, bark and leaves are often used medicinally.
