Traditionally cultivated as an oil and paint plant. The safflower oil is extracted from the seeds. Thistle-like plant with slightly prickly leaves and flowers, colouring from yellow via orange to red. Nowadays known as cut and dried flower. Birds and mice love the seeds.

Sow outdoors: April-May, cannot be transplanted.
